STUDENT LEARNING

Grade School – Junior High School

To keep parents informed of their children’s progress, students will be provided Progress Reports to be delivered to their parents at the end of every term.  The Progress Reports should be signed and returned to school.

Additionally, midterm exams will be administered to students in the middle of every term to track their learning progress.  In the event the midterm exams reveal a student to be struggling to make appropriate progress in any given subject, teachers will be tasked with creating a learning plan for the student tailored to the student’s needs, with the aim of catching the student up.  Teachers will notify the parents of struggling students’ midterm scores, and share the learning plan with them as well.  Parents are strongly encouraged to stay abreast of student’s learning progress, and to share any concerns or insights with teachers and/or administration.  End of term exams will also be administered to Grade School and Junior High School students at the end of every academic term.

Students will be identified at the end of the school year for academic and citizenship honours.  Students will be honoured in their classrooms at the end of the school year for service to the BenStel community, academic achievements, and other notable accomplishments.  The categories are as follows:

  • A Honour Roll: All A’s in every subject for all three terms.
  • B Honour Roll: All A’s and B’s in every subject for all three terms.
  • Citizenship Award: Each teacher selects one student from their class who has shown exemplary behaviour and treatment of others for all three terms.
  • Effort Award: Each teacher chooses one student from their class who has shown exemplary effort in all aspects of their school year.
  • Perfect Attendance: A student is present every school day of the academic year.

Nursery – Kindergarten

Parents of students in the Nursery through Kindergarten classes will be provided monthly progress reports.  In the event the progress reports show a student is consistently struggling to make appropriate learning progress, teachers – in consultation with parents – will be tasked with creating a learning plan for the student tailored to their needs, with the aim of catching the student up.

Field Trips and Special Events

Field trips are scheduled throughout the year as part of the regular school program for students old enough to participate.  Field trips offer a unique off-campus learning experience for BenStel students.  BenStel will arrange educational trips to various sites which include: airports, museums, agricultural sites, and other interesting and educationally enriching places.  Parents will be provided notice of these trips well before they take place.  All students should have a signed permission form on file with the classroom teacher for each field trip.  Students who do not return a signed permission form to their teachers will not be permitted to attend such trips.  Such absences shall not, however, affect the students’ grades or progress reports in any way.

Students will be expected to wear their school uniforms and be on their best behaviour while on such trips, as they are ambassadors of BenStel.  Students who display repeated disruptive behaviour or disrespect will not be permitted to participate in BenStel field trips.  Students who do not attend field trips, will be expected to attend school and complete classroom assignments that will be aligned with their current curriculum.

Throughout the school year BenStel also offers many special activities for students such as parties and special assemblies.  Participation in these events is a reward for students who cooperate fully with our school behaviour, academic, and attendance policies.  Participation in any special event or any extracurricular activity is always subject to the discretion of teachers and the administration.
